Nanoheterostructures containing boron and nitrogen

A method to grow boron nitrogen nanoheterostructures has been developed. This method is based on an alteration to a process that has been shown to be suitable for the growth of pure boron nanostructures. The technique uses the solid precursors MCM-41, nickel boride and magnesium diboride or magnesium tetrahydroborate in combination with flowing ammonia gas. Two boron nitrogen nanoheterostructures were found. One boron nitrogen heterostructure is a nanowire with alternating pure boron and boron nitride sections, creating an axial heterostructure. This material is reported for the first time in the literature. The other is a boron nitride nanotube filled with magnesium oxide, a radial nanoheterostructure. Additional modifications to the process resulted in novel methods of synthesizing boron nitride nanowires, boron nanowires and boron nitride nanotubes. The boron nitrogen nanoheterostructures found in this study have the potential for applications in electronics or optics due to the wide band gap of boron nitride. These materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy.
