摘要

Metal matrix composites (MMCs) are new engineering materials in which a high strength ceramic reinforcement is incorporated into a metal matrix to improve their properties. Metal matrix composites have high strength to weight ratio, high toughness, high impact strength, low sensitivity to temperature changes, low sensitivity to surface flaws and high surface durability. In the present work, aluminium alloy-aluminium oxide composites were developed using vortex method and pressure die casting technique. The hardness increases with the amount of alumina particle reinforcement. Drilling studies were conducted on aluminium alloy-aluminium oxide composite workpiece using high speed steel drill tools in a drilling machine. The surface finish is better for higher speeds and lower feed rates. The surface finish is poorer as the amount of particle reinforcement increases. The surface roughness of the plain aluminium alloy is better than that of the aluminium alloy-aluminium oxide composites. The drill tool flank wear increases with speed, feed rate and amount of particle reinforcement. The drill tool flank wear is higher on machining the aluminium alloy-aluminium oxide metal matrix composites than that on machining the plain aluminium alloy.
