4'-Phenyl-4,2':6',4 ''-terpyridine (3) reacts with Cd(NO(3))(2)center dot 4H(2)O in MeOH-CHCl(3) to produce [Cd(3)(2)(ONO(2))(2)center dot MeOH center dot CHCl(3)](n) in high yield; two sets of undulating chains built up from trans-related ligands result in the formation of two-dimensional sheets, locked together by efficient pi-stacking involving the phenyl substituents.
