摘要

High speed extrusion and coating for telephone cable core wire is frequently used by manufacturers. The speed at which the conducting wire goes through the crosshead is about 1500-2400 m/min. The flow of polyethylene (PE) melt in round pressure dies for wire and cable was analysed in this paper. The torque required for extrusion through a round die is determined by the apparent viscosity of PE melt, while the apparent pressure in the crosshead for wire and cable in high speed extrusion coating is determined by the Barus effect rate (B) of PE melt. Using a bigger mold sheath results in lower apparent pressure. These factors have been verified by experimental data. In accordance with the experimental data, the smoothness level of the coated core wire was found to be influenced by the ratio of melt flow index at different loads (the ratio=MFI21.6/MFI2.16). Hence, the Barus effect rate and the melt flow ratio are the two main parameters which influence the high speed extrusion and coating property of PE melt, and can be used as two controlling indexes for production of the PE insulation materials.
