In this study, a microencapsulated phase change material (MEPCM) layer was attached to the back of a photovoltaic (PV) panel to form a MEPCM-PV module that floated on the water surface. Subsequently, numerical simulations were used to determine if this PV module could effectively store solar radiation energy at the bottom of the MEPCM layer and release it to the underneath water at night during the winter season. This analysis was based on local winter climatic conditions, such as air temperature, sky temperature, wind speed, solar irradiation, water temperature, and water flow rate. The investigated parameters included the melting point (18 and 17 degrees C) and thickness (5 and 3 cm) of the MEPCM. The PV treated with a 5 cm/ melting point 17 degrees C MEPCM layer effectively released the energy that was stored during the daytime to the water. This energy release provided a local high temperature area for the aqua farms during cold weather and reduced the cold damage.
