The direct causes inducing the change of forest cover due to changes in land use have been identified as general categories. However, these categories do not capture the differentiated manner in which the people respond to the socio-economical opportunities that drive the changes in land use at the local scale. It was established whether the causes; at the individual level, that induce changes in the forest cover upon land usage are similar in the landscape mosaics of the upper basin of the Botanamo River in Southern Venezuela. By applying semi-structured questionnaires, the actors with the highest potential to impact the basin forest were identified, and three dimensions were characterized: socio-economical, land property and handling, and changes in use/cover Each interview was geo-referenced to relate it to the landscape mosaics, and discriminant analysis was used to identify the variables that contribute to differentiate amongst mosaics. Cattle breeders and local resident farmers are the actors that impact forest the most, and the direct driving causes inducing the changes differ in the three landscape mosaics: low family income in the continuous and apparently unused forest mosaic, production units <10ha in areas of urban expansion, and large (500-5000ha) cattle production units in the most fragmented mosaic. Results indicate that the direct deforestation causes in the basin are coupled to spatial and temporal landscape changes.
