NONEXISTENCE OF THE SOLITARY-WAVE SOLUTIONS OF THE SAKUMA-NISHIGUCHI EQUATION

Making a qualitative analysis, we prove that no nonsingular solitary-wave solution exists for the Sakuma-Nishiguchi equation u(tt) - c2u(xx) - Mu(xxxx) + N(u(xx)2)xx = 0 [Phys. Rev. B 41, 12 117 (1990)], which describes surface acoustic waves in a semi-infinite layered medium with a free surface. From this, we conclude that the solitary-wave solutions obtained by Sakuma and Nishiguchi using the weak-nonlinearity approximation and by Huang using a function-series-solution approach [Phys. Rev. B 44, 3377 (1991)] do not pertain to this model equation.
