摘要

The bit-error rate (BER) is an important specification for characterizing the reliability of a communication network link. Aiming at the passive optical access network and wireless broadband access network with the multi-rate levels and the high cost of operation and maintenance, a low cost and portable bit-error rate tester (BERT) with both optical and electrical ports, and operational rates between 10 Mb/s and 11.3 Gb/s, is designed and developed in this paper, which consists of a pseudo random binary sequence (PRBS) generator, an error detector (ED), a microcontroller unit (MCU) and a small form-factor pluggable optical transceiver. The test results reveals the generated PRBS has the characteristics of high stability and low jitter and the error counter is accurate for a variety of communication protocols.
