摘要

This year academic psychiatry celebrates its 200(th) birthday. On 21 October 1811 Johann Christian August Heinroth was inaugurated first professor for "mental therapy" at Leipzig University. This anniversary is of utmost importance for the international psychiatry. Surprisingly however this has not yet been acknowledged. On the basis of archival sources the study documents Heinroth's career and retells the emergence of the first professorship. It also aims at raising awareness of the anniversary. Heinroth's noticeable interest in alienist and psychiatric issues was a key promotor for establishing the professorship. This process was helped by the general reform movement as well as the setting up of dedicated mental asylums in Saxony, which gave rise to a need for qualified training. This need was acknowledged and supported by Saxon administrative bodies. The latter two circumstances are substantiated here for the first time. The study also acknowledges Heinroth's lasting merits for the conceptual history of psychiatry, which had been neglected for a long time in view of their strong theological blend and their often purely hypothetical etiological contemplations.
