A straightforward and sustainable one-pot, four-component synthesis of rhodanine derivatives

We report a practical and rapid one-pot synthesis of arylidene rhodanine derivatives by condensation between primary amines, aldehydes, ethyl chloroacetate, and carbon disulfide in polyethylene glycol (PEG) at room temperature or additionally with ultrasonic irradiation. A variety of medicinally important rhodanine derivatives can be obtained from simple starting materials in high yields and purity without a tedious work-up, after a recrystallization from ethanol.
