Metaphor in Imagist Poetry from the Perspective of Stylistics

The imagism is a poetic movement that came out in the 20 th century. In the former period, the poets depend largely on semantic deviation to juxtapose absent and abstract images with readers'familiar and concrete images. In the collision of the images, the readers may sense the beauty of the images and the poets'imagination."Jacobsen points out that the transition from the Modernism to post Modernism is a transition from metaphoric language to metonymic language."(Brooks, 2004) In the later imagist poems, the language becomes metonymic but the uses of metaphor dose not disappear in the poems. The later imagist poets depend on graphological deviation, using language symbols to present the images so as to make the readers feel a different beauty.
