New coumarin-based dual chromogenic probe: Naked eye detection of copper and silver ions

A new coumarin-based probe 1 was prepared for the detection of Cu2+ and Ag+ in aqueous solutions. Probe 1 shows highly selective and sensitive chromogenic recognition toward Cu2+ and Ag+, before and after exposure to natural sunlight, respectively. The selectivity toward Cu2+ or Ag+ was not interfered with by other metal ions. The detection limits for Cu2+ and Ag+ ion were determined as (7.99 +/- 0.04) x 10(-6) (M) and (8.60 +/- 0.04) x 10(-10) M, respectively. Thus, the probe 1 can be used as a practical, highly sensitive chromogenic probe for the determination of Cu2+ and Ag+ in aqueous medium.
