An adaptive evolutionary algorithm for optimizing process planning of parallel drilling operations

This paper presents a process planning scheme for parallel drilling operations with a mixture of blind and through holes distributed in a single pair and multiple pairs of parallel faces. An evolutionary algorithm (EA) is proposed to solve this problem. First, the EA determines the machining time of each blind and through hole, and which tool will machine which holes. Second, a genetic operation with adaptive crossover and mutation is proposed to optimize, in terms of minimum completion time, the process parameters and machining sequence. In order to demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme, the EA is applied to two case studies and compared to a conventional genetic algorithm (GA) and sequence algorithm (SA) in terms of the completion time, machining sequence, and computation time. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme, in terms of total completion time, is more effective than the GA and SA in solving the process planning optimization problem for parallel drilling operations of blind and through holes in both a single pair and multiple pairs of parallel faces.
