In this article, a comb-line architecture is proposed for miniaturization of a 3-dB hybrid transmission coupler. The comb-line coupler uses a periodic structure of distributed capacitance and inductance, thereby reducing the physical length of the coupler compared with conventional structures. Using the above principle, a miniaturized 3-dB comb-line hybrid coupler (operational range 1.71-2.17 GHz) was designed and manufactured, and its performance was compared with that of a conventional 3-dB hybrid coupler. The size of the 3-dB comb-line hybrid coupler was reduced by 22.6% while maintaining the same performance as a conventional general hybrid coupler.
