To decrease the high density and thermal conductivity of traditional carbon/phenolic composite, a novel carbon/phenolic was prepared by high porosity phenolic impregnated short carbon fiber skeleton with light mass, and low thermal conductivity. The density of the carbon/phenolic composite is in the range of 0.25-0.43 g/cm(3) and the room temperature thermal conductivity is 0.20 similar to 0.35 W/mK. During the oxygen acetylene flame assessment, when the surface temperature is more than 1900 degrees C, only 200 degrees C is tested at 40 mm in-depth from the surface after 120 s explosion, indicating a good insulation of the low-density carbon/phenolic composite.
