Detailed observations of the haloes around elliptical galaxies, galaxy groups and clusters of galaxies have shown that the hot gas in these systems must be heated by a non-gravitational energy source. Our understanding of structure formation in the universe also requires the heating of vast amounts of gas to prevent excessive star formation. The energy transported by outflows from the centres of active galaxies (AGN) is a prime suspect in both cases. In this report on an RAS Specialist Discussion meeting, held at the RAS on 9 March 2007, we review the current status of AGN heating in observation and theory.
