摘要

Mollusca of early Whaingaroan age recorded from the Ototara Limestone of North Otago are 13 genera/species of calcitic bivalves including scallops, oysters, limids, anomiids, Dimya and the first New Zealand fossil record of Cyclopecten and one genus of gastropods (opercula attributed to Argalista). Drill-holes in numerous other taxa were probably made by predatory muricid gastropods. The bivalves were all epifaunal, with habits ranging from free-lying and swimming to avoid predators to cemented or byssally attached to the substrate. Many of the bivalves appear to be delicate juveniles. This faunule, probably much reduced by dissolution, was part of a highly diverse biota that lived in a warm, shallow sea on a volcanic high swept by currents.
