摘要

Objective: EDTA-dependent PTCP is a phenomenon characterized by a spurious low platelet count due to platelet clumping in blood sample anticoagulated with EDTA. Nowadays, a significant number of patients who are considered thrombocytopenia are actually pseudothrombocytopenia cases. The detection of these cases is extremely important for prevention of the wrong treatments and practices.
Method: The platelet counts of the patient who was thought to have pseudothrombocytopenia were measured at room temperature and 37 degrees C by using the blood samples with EDTA and citrate taken for erythrocyte sedimentation rate. In addition, platelet counts were repeated at room temperature and 37 degrees C after adding kanamycin in blood sample containing EDTA.
Results: As a result of measurement, low platelet counts were found in blood sample containing EDTA at room temperature and 37 degrees C. However, platelet counts in blood samples containing citrate and kanamycin supplemented blood sample containing EDTA at both temperatures were normal.
Conclusion: In this paper, we presented a patient with a spurious diagnosis idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, but who is in fact a case of EDTA-dependent pseudothrombocytopenia after laboratory analyses.
