摘要

Using genome wide association (GWA) studies new knowledge about the inheritance and molecular basis of common diseases such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease has been gained. Genome wide association studies were also applied successfully to asthma and allergies. Gene loci on chromosomes 1q32, 2p12, 5q12, 5q22, 6q23, 8p21, 9q21 and 17q21 were associated with asthma in this way. Great hopes have been put in these studies, especially in the potential translation of these results into practice to improve the quality of health care for patients with asthma. How realistic these hopes are, what to expect from this new knowledge and whether certain aspects of these studies may affect daily practice in paediatrics and allergology is discussed in this review.
