This update summarizes 10 cardiology articles published in 2010 that were selected for their novelty, quality, and potential impact on clinical practice. The year was notable in documenting that we have significantly increased the number of procedures using ionizing radiation (computed tomography, myocardial perfusion imaging [MPI], coronary angiography) not uncommonly in asymptomatic persons without evidence of clinical benefit. In addition, several studies highlighted the importance of emphasizing lifestyle changes-diet, exercise, and smoking cessation-as the most effective way to reduce cardiovascular risk.
