摘要

Morphologic alterations in the endometrium of mores collected at a breeding soundness evaluation were assessed. The influence of age group (<9 years, 9 to 12 years, >12 years) and stage of the oestrous cycle (seasonal anoestrus, oestrus, luteal phase) on the endometrial findings was determined. A total of 129 endometrial biopsies collected from 125 mares were evaluated. Only biopsies collected from mares that had no clinical alterations of the external and internal genitalia and a negative uterine culture were included into the study. Age group of mares significantly influenced the classification of their biopsies according to Kenney und Doig (1986). A higher number of young mares was classified in category I to IIA than in the other groups (p<0.05). Chronic degenerative alterations of the endometrium occurred more frequently in older mares (p<0.05). The endometrium of seasonally anoestrous mares was less active than in cyclic mares (p<0.01). In 103 mares, a chronic infiltrative endometritis and in 12 mares, a light acute endometritis was detected. Sixty-one mores were bred within 12 months after collection of the biopsy, 51 of them became pregnant, but 10 mares did not conceive. No significant differences in the morphological alterations of the endometrial biopsies in the 2 groups were seen. However, mares that remained barren were older than mares that conceived (p<0.05). In summary, findings of the present study support previous observations that endometrial biopsy is a valuable diagnostic and prognostic tool in the evaluation of fertility in the mare.
