Distribution pattern of eosinophilic granular cells in the intestine of the convict cichlid Amatitlania nigrofasciata (Gunther, 1867)

The distribution of eosinophilic granule cells (EGCs) in the intestine of the convict cichlid Amatitlania nigrofasciata was evaluated morphometrically to examine the effect of body mass and diet on their incidence. Therefore, two groups of adult fish were monitored over a time period of three weeks and fed according to two different regimes. The intestine of A. nigrofasciata displayed consistent uniform histological structure. Mean EGC frequency per mm(2) intestinal area differed between the intestinal segments (IS). EGCs were found primarily in the propria-submucosa, less frequently in the lamina epithelialis and tunica muscularis. In individual fish, the mucosal basement membrane (MBM) of the propria-submucosa was irregular and thickened. Different feeding regimes employed in the present study did not stimulate a difference in the intestinal EGC distribution in A. nigrofasciata.
