During recent ten years, Ag-loaded sustained release antimicrobial dressings have been drawn great attention in the fields of medicine and sanitation because of their excellence characteristic. This review highlights the antimicrobial mechanisms and sustained release methods of silver. It emphatically introduces the functions of the primary Ag-loaded sustained release antimicrobial dressings on the international market, and summarizes the progress in the novel Ag-loaded sustained release antimicrobial dressings from the area of material, including biopolymer, synthetic polymer, blended biopolymer and synthetic polymer and silicone materials. Finally, the challenge and problem for the development of Ag-loaded sustained release antimicrobial dressings are discussed.
