Autophagy thwarts muscle disease

Skeletal muscles in a mouse model of human muscular dystrophy degenerate because of excessive cell death. A new study suggests that these muscles suffer from lack of autophagy, exacerbating apoptosis and mitochondrial dyspages 1313-1320). Reactivation of autophagy with a low-protein diet may ameliorate muscle myopathy.
