substations (ESs) that have input and output lines. However, a TPTS usually meets large area blackouts (LABs) because of the faults that occur in the input lines. This paper proposes a hierarchical multi-agent architecture to perform the self-healing of smart grids (SGs) based on IEC 61499. Each ES is controlled by an agent. Furthermore, all ESs of a TPTS are divided into three layers (high, medium, and low voltage ESs) and all agents are classified into three categories (High-Agents, Medium-Agents, and Low-Agents) according to the three layers of ESs. Moreover, the agents are coordinated by a coordination protocol based on IEC 61850 to perform the information switching. If a fault occurs in the input lines of an ES, it can be automatically detected and restored by the controlled agent of the ES and a LAB is avoided. In addition, a metamodel of the architecture and three sequence diagrams of the coordination protocol are given. Finally, a simulator is developed to verify the correctness of the architecture and coordination protocol with a real case study.
