Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the serum levels of C3 and C4 between active and inactive SLE patients. %26lt;br%26gt;Design: Cross-sectional study with systemic sampling was conducted from June 2009 till December 2010 on SLE patients that fulfilling the revised 1987 American Rheumatism Association (ARA) criteria %26lt;br%26gt;Materials and Methods: Serum from each subject was measured for C3 and C4 using immunoturbidity technique. SLE disease activity was determined using the SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI) score. Active SLE patient was defined as having SLEDAI score of more than eight and inactive SLE was defined as having SLEDAI score of equal to or less than eight. %26lt;br%26gt;Results: The mean C3 of active SLE patients was significantly lower (0.99 +/- 0.54) than in inactive SLE patients (1.37 +/- 0.15, p %26lt; 0.01). The mean complement C4 of active SLE patients was also significantly lower (0.23 +/- 0.19) than in inactive SLE patients (0.33 +/- 0.15). The level of C3 (r = -0.31, p %26lt; 0.01) and the level of C4 (r = -0.21, p %26gt; 0.05) were correlated significantly with the SLEDAI score. %26lt;br%26gt;Conclusion: This study suggests that lower serum levels of C3 and C4 in active SLE patients might contribute to the etiopathogenesis of SLE and the severity of disease activity in SLE patients.
