摘要

Background: This study aims to investigate the effects of single and dual reservoired oxygenators used in open heart surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) on the cytokine, complement, C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cells (WBC).
Methods: Patients were divided into two equal groups according to single (control group) and dual reservoired oxygenators (study group). Blood samples were collected before CPB, after heparin administration and at six and 24 hours following CPB in both groups. We analyzed the levels of complement (C3, C4), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukins (IL 6-8-10), CRP, and WBC.
Results: Both groups using single and double reservoired oxygenators were similar in terms of age, sex, height, body weight, and comorbidities. There was no difference in C3, C4, TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, CRP and WBC levels, before CPB and at six and 24 hours following CPB in both groups.
Conclusion: Using single and double reservoired oxygenators during CPB in open heart surgery has no significant effect on inflammatory response.
