摘要

This study describes the detection of Macrorhabdus ornithogaster, formerly known as "Megabacterium", systematically an anamorph yeast of the Saccharomycetes. The disease caused by this yeast is called Macrorhabdiosis. A total of 1,137 birds in 16 orders were dissected and impression smears from eight organs were stained with Giemsa. Most of the detections were achieved in preparations of the surface of the glandular stomach. Macrorhabdus ornithogaster was found in different frequencies in birds of the orders Psittaci-, Passeri-, Anseri-, Galli- and Columbiformes. First evidence of the casual agent in two diseased feral pigeons was ascertained. Length measurements of the agent ranged in very different dimensions between 10-90 rho m in the various bird orders. Histological examination of Giemsa-positive glandular stomachs sometimes gave false negative results and is therefore not an adequate diagnostic procedure. Accomplished growth experiments using different liquid and solid media and various incubation temperatures have failed so far. However, within these experiments a very long persistence of Macrorhabdus ornithogaster in the inoculated media was detected.
