A growing number of persons avoid using their car whenever they can take advantage of someone else's trip. Besides saving money in different ways, they wish to reduce the ecological impacts of the use of their cars. Thus, several services have surfaced on the Internet that offer means to either find or solicit a trip that could be shared; that is, which satisfies three main conditions: that it goes where one wishes to go, starting from a point in which one could board the car; that the date and time coincides with the desired ones; and that the driver is willing to offer a ride. Since none of the services found had certain characteristics that would make it attractive to more users, a software package called GRRIDES (green rides) was created. It asks drivers (those who make them) to offer trips to others that might make use of them. The package was conceived in such a way that any community may install such a service for its members. Security considerations and flexibility of search criteria to find a convenient trip that can be shared were taken into account, but several features were added so that the service could attract a greater number of users.
