A novel cobalt(II) coordination polymer {Co(phen)(H2O)[C8H14(COO)(2)]}(n)center dot(CH3OH)(n) has been hydrothermally synthesized by the reaction of (1S,3R)-1,2,2-trimethyl-1,3-cyclopentanedicarboxylic acid [(1S,3R)-camphoric acid, C8H14(COOH)(2)], 1,10-phenanthroline(phen) and hydrous cobalt sulfate in the solvent mixture of water and methanol. Crystal data for this complex: monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n, a=1.230 33(11) nm, b=1.363 18(12) nm, c=1.388 91(12) nm, beta=106.5700(10)degrees, V=2.2327(3) nm(3), D-c=1.450 g center dot cm(-3), Z=4, F(000)=1 020, final GooF=1.057, R-1=0.0490, wR(2)=0.1429. The cobalt(U) ion is six-coordinated with two nitrogen atoms of one 1,10-phenanthroline molecule, three oxygen atoms from two camphoric acids and one water oxygen atom, forming a distorted octahedral coordination geometry. Adjacent cobalt(U) ions are bridged by (IS,3R)-camphoric acid groups, resulting in a ID chain structure. CCDC: 727758.
