A variety of alpha-substituted butenolides was efficiently synthesized starting from commercially available tetronic acid and carboxylic acids in four steps. The effectiveness of this approach is illustrated in the short synthesis of one of the first butenolide acetogenins: (+)-ancepsenolide.
