The title compound, NH(4)YbP(2)O(7), crystallizes in the KA1P(2)O(7) structure type and consists of distorted YbO(6) octahedra and bent P(2)O(7)(4-) diphosphate units forming together a three-dimensional network. There are channels in the structure running along the c axis, where the NH(4)(+) cations are located. They are connected via N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds to the terminal O atoms of the diphosphate anions.
