The detection limit of berberine polyvinyl chloride (PVC) ion selective-electrode is determined chiefly by dissolution of active substance in water from PV membrane and transfer of ion determined in PVC membrane from internal reference solution to external solution. In order to improve the detection limit, we used clonidine-tetraphenylborate as ion pair complex for the determination of berbine with internal reference solution of NaCl containing clonidine, and a satisfied result was obtained with a linear range of 1.0 x 10(-4) similar to 1.0 x 10(-8) mol/L, average slope of 58.6 mV/decade and detection limit of 2.5 x 10(-9) mol/L which was 2similar to3 orders of magnitude lower than that of previous reports. This method - shows higher selectivity than that of other reports, and more true and reliable selectivity coefficients can be, measured. The electrode also shows stable land good reproducibility. Satisfactory recoveries are acquired by the standard addition method.
