N-Butyl-N,N-dimethyl-alpha-phenylethylammonium bromide catalyzes efficiently the three component condensation reaction of an aromatic aldehyde, a beta-keto ester and urea/thiourea under solvent free conditions at 100degreesC to afford the corresponding dihydropyrimidinone in high yield.
