Detoxification of a Triphenylmethane Textile Colorant Using Acclimated Cells of Bacillus mannanilyticus strain AVS

An indigenous bacterium, Bacillus mannanilyticus strain AVS from an acclimated mixed bacterial culture was screened to biotransform a triphenylmethane dye; methyl violet (MV). The strain was acclimated to MV structure and thus, the cells exhibited an average decolorization rate (ADR) of 69.44 lg min 21 with simultaneous reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD) level (94%) when incubated for 24 h under static condition. The inducible extracellular oxidoreductases catalyzed MV biotransformation and produced metabolites which were devoid of chlorine. The phytotoxicity assays assessed the toxicity of the biotransformed products. This is the first report on TPM dye degradation and mineralization using B. mannanilyticus strain AVS.
