A Lu3+-PVC membrane electrode based on 1,2-bis(2-hydroxynaphtamido)-4,5-dimethylbenzene (HND) as a sensing ionophore has been constructed for the determination of lutetium(III) in aqueous solutions. The electrode performance exhibits a Nernstian slope of 19.6 +/- 0.2 mV decade(-1) in the concentration range of 1.0x10(-6) and 1.0x10(-2) mol L-1 with a detection limit of 8.0x10(-7) mol L-1 in the pH range of 2.3-7.4. The response time for the proposed electrode was similar to 7.5 s, and its selectivity with respect to common alkali, alkaline earth, transition and heavy metal ions, including members of the lanthanide family other than Lu3+ was good. The proposed sensor was effectively used as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration of Lu3+ ions with EDTA. The proposed electrode sensor accuracy was studied by the monitoring of Lu3+ in various mixtures of different ions.
