Age Dynamics of ECoG and Epileptiform Activity in Wistar Rat Cortical Model of Focal Epilepsy

Age dynamics of ECoG and convulsive epileptiform activity, induced by intracortical 4-aminopyr-idine injections are studied on Wistar rats in three age periods, corresponding childhood (P20-30),adolescence (P30-45) and adult (P90-120). It is shown that the ECoG power spectrums during wakefulness and "sleep spindles" increase and slow-wave sleep reduces in ontogeny. Also in adolescent rats revealed significant differences in the parameters of seizure activity - the average frequency of individual "spike-wave" complexes and the latent period of epileptiform activity onset are higher than in childhood and adult. The total duration of epileptiform activity in adolescent rats were significantly lower than in adult rats and in rats aged P20-30. Perhaps the nervous system during adolescence has specific protective mechanisms, which reduce the intensity of seizure activity (ability to generate and disseminate of spike-wave activity) and increase resistance to epileptogen.
