ANALYSIS OF THE ANTIRETROVIRAL TREATMENT'S EFFECTIVENESS IN MONOTHERAPY WITH LOPINAVIR/RITONAVIR

Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r) monotherapy for HIV-1 patients, analyze the causes of the beginning and interruption of the treatment and determine the factors that influence in the therapeutic response.
Method: Retrospective review (2004-2007) of non-naive seropositive patients, with LVP/r, in an educational hospital. Main variables: plasma viral load and CD4 lymphocytes. Secondary variables: parenteral drug addiction, HBV/HCV co-infection and reasons for the beginning and interruption of the monotherapy.
Results: 72 patients were included in the study (62.5% men, age median 43 years). The viral load reduction (p = 0.029) and the immunological recovery (p = 0.00) were significant Main reasons for beginning: 59.7% adverse effects and 31.9% adherence difficulty. Half of the patients interrupted treatment (58% adverse effects, 22% therapeutic failure, and 20% giving up/loss).
Conclusions: This simplified therapeutic strategy to treat HIV-1 seems to open a way for controlling the infection.
