Axial variation of the end splits index in the base and top of Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden logs

This study was undertaken to evaluate the axial variation of end splits at lower and larger end of Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden logs. An 18 years old experiment was analyzed, located in the northern coast of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Trees were selected based on the dominant and central diameter. After cutting, logs were selected at between 1.30 m above the ground (DBH) and 25% commercial height position, 25% and 50%; 50% and 75%; 75% and 100% of commercial height, for the end splits study. The end splits in the dominant and central trees was higher in the second log sampled, both at the lower as well as at the larger end, suggesting that sectioning should be carried out in conjunction with techniques that minimize growth stress release, especially when this is performed at about half of the commercial height.
