摘要

An oscillating rod provides the basis for a simple but accurate method of determining the Young%26apos;s modulus of a variety of solid materials. The exercise is suitable for introductory to advanced laboratory students, and has the advantage that measurements can be performed quickly enough that the elastic properties of several different materials can be easily compared. In addition, the experimental design provides a useful visual connection to the atomic scale accommodation of elastic deformation by the stretching and compressing of interatomic bonds, and reinforces the link between structure and properties of matter and the differences between elastic, plastic and brittle material behavior. While a complete understanding of the underlying theory requires some calculus, the experiment can be presented in a descriptive fashion without compromise to overall learning outcomes.
