A solar air-conditioning system with combined double-effect and single-effect LiBr absorption cycle (CDSC) was proposed, which aimed to use in residential buildings. A moderate temperature solar collector array was laid out on the roof of the building that produces steam to drive a LiBr absorption chiller and in meanwhile accumulate heat in a pressurized hot water-tank during irradiation daytime, and the chiller is switched to single-effect cycle driven by the stored hot-water during non-irradiation hours or when heat resource temperature drops to below 140 degrees C. The designed solar air-conditioning system is also combined with domestic water-heating, to make full use of the solar collectors year-round. A LiBr absorption refrigerator consists of plate-shell heat exchangers was used in the system to enhance the heat and mass transfer. Finally, a calculation example is presented, which indicates that an integrated solar air-conditioning and water-heating system of CDSC with total solar collector area of 120 m(2), the volume of the storage thank 6 m(3) and the percentage of double-effect chilling 0.3, can supply full-load chilling capacity of 34.5 kW by 12.8 h daily in summer, about 73.4 kW-h per household for 6 households in the top floor, and it also supplies sufficient domestic hot water for every household in a 42 households residential building year round. The results show that the CDSC system is very promising especially in high efficient and very dense in energy storage that it might operate continually day and night without using any other auxiliary energy.
