The effect of the polyborosiloxane (PB) on the flame retardancy of PC was investigated by LOT test and cone colorimeter, and the flame retardant mode of the PB in the PC/PB system was analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), FT-IR, SEM and pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (PY-GC/MS). The PB is effective in retarding the combustion of PC. It was found that a borosilicate glassy layer and Si-C cross-linking structure were formed on the surface of the FR-PC during combustion. The PB promoted the formation of the dense char that protected the matrix of plastic, and could moderate the combustion process. According to cone colorimeter test, the heat release rate, smoke, CO and CO2 emissions of the PC/PB composite (FR-PC) obviously decreased in comparison with virgin PC. The PB significantly improved the flame retardancy of the PC, and decreased the fire hazard.
