A variety of 4-substituted beta-lactams can be readily prepared by the radical addition-transfer of 4-S-xanthyl-azetidinones to unactivated olefins. For this radical chain process to operate efficiently it is necessary to place an acyl group on the nitrogen of the azetidinone ring.
