摘要

The hot dip galvanising of structural steelwork is one of the most economic ways of preventing its corrosion. The requirements placed on the zinc coating have expanded over the years such that by varying the composition of the galvanising bath the thickness of the zinc coating applied has been able to be reduced and the appearance of the zinc coating improved. On the other hand, the number of failures in galvanised steel structures involving liquid metal induced stress corrosion cracking has however increased in recent years. In carrying out investigations into the failure of such structural components, the preparation of the specimens of zinc coatings applied to structural steel-work has proved to be especially demanding. The reason for this is the cathodic protection given to the iron by the zinc coating in the presence of electrolytes. When etching galvanised steel specimens, this protective action leads to the zinc coating being especially strongly attacked, whilst the microstructure of the adjacent steel substrate material exhibits hardly any sign of microstructural development. In this article, two methods of etching are presented with which it is possible to reveal both the microstructures of the zinc coating as well as that of the substrate material.
