There have been tremendous developments in new medical technologies over the past few decades with the emergence of enhanced medical imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), 3-D ultrasound scanning, computer-assisted tomography (CAT), radionuclide scanning, and digital X-ray imaging for early disease detection and diagnosis Though these new medical techniques dramatically improved health care for people by providing better diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and neurological disorder, they also adversely increased medical care costs A specific example of X-ray imaging technology is provided and how the new advanced medical technologies have impacted the health care insurance costs in the United States is discussed
