Assessment of the olfactory impact of wastewater mechanical treatment processes

Four-hundred-sixty-two Polish wastewater treatment plants (output more than 60 m(3)/d) were assessed for olfactory impact by poll among the plant administration to identify the odorant emission sources. The nuisance degree was diverse in particular size groups of treatment plants, and to a large extent depended on operating conditions ("opened" or "closed" objects). Sewage disposal stations as well as wastes from mechanical treatment (screenings, sand, primary sludge), had influence on the odor nuisance recorded by inhabitants to the largest extent. In more than 80% cases, range of unfavorable odor impact did not exceed 0,5 km. Period of high temperatures in the summer was favorable to occurrence of arduous odors.
