摘要
M2M communication is an important part of smart grid communication networks. Improved automation in smart grids results in many heterogeneous applications based on M2M communications. However, the authentication for a large number of M2M nodes in smart grids has become a challenging issue. In this article, we design a last-mile authentication scheme for AMI that utilizes smart meters to enable two-way communications between the meters and the utility. We also present a framework of M2M authentication in smart grids via a two-layer approach, that is, global and local layers. More specifically, smart meters are authenticated globally by PKI, and authenticated locally by channel signatures. The usage patterns of electricity and personal private information are distributed separately in utility and service provider for protecting the privacy of customers. The proposed framework helps to achieve the goals of reliable and secure M2M communications among smart meters.
