Reaction of 1-(4'-nitrobenzyl)-4-methylpyridinium chloride ([NO(2)BzMePy]Cl and CuCl2 with concentrated hydrochloric acid results in the forming of an unexpected coordination polymer {[NO(2)BzMePy][CuCl3]}(infinity) (1), in which the [CuCl3](-) anions form a one-dimensional chlorine-bridged Cu(II) chain with the Cu center dot center dot center dot Cu distance of 3.236 angstrom, while the [NO(2)BzMePy](+) cations stack into a column through C-H center dot center dot center dot pi and pi center dot center dot center dot pi interactions. The crystal structure is stabilized by an extensive network of C-H center dot center dot center dot Cl hydrogen bonds between the columns and the chains, and 1 exhibits ferromagnetic coupling behavior with J = 22.11 cm(-1).
