The efficiency of mining the rock and other materials with mining machines used in the mining, construction and road industry is largely dependant upon the stereometry of their working units. The stereometry is determined at the design stage using dedicated software, individually for the mining machine's specific working conditions. Inspecting the conformity of pickboxes' arrangement and setting to the working documentation plays an important part in the manufacturing process of working units for mining machines. The inspection generally consists of measuring the stereometric parameters being a set of values determining a position on the side surface and spatial arrangement of each pickbox. The methods currently in use are very time- and work-consuming and feature poor accuracy, especially when measuring angles determining the spatial arrangement of individual pickboxes. The design and operation of the instruments used for this purpose is often complicated.
The measurement method and mathematical measurement model established allow to determine, relatively easily, the spatial arrangement and setting of pickboxes at the side surface of working units in mining machines equipped with conical picks (tangential rotary) with the required measuring accuracy using typical measuring instruments used commonly in the metrology of geometric values and in the coordination measuring technique. It is an indirect method based on the measurement of translation coordinates of three non-collinear characteristic measuring points for the pickbox in the three-dimensional space of the measuring station.
