Doubly-doped PbWO4 crystals with (Mo6+, PbF2), (Mo6+, Gd3+), (PbF2, Gd3+) and (PbF2, Y3+) were grown by using the Czochralski method. The double-doping effects of the impurity ions in PbWO4 crystals on the luminescence enhancement were investigated by measurements of the light yield, the X-ray excited luminescence spectra, the optical absorption and the excitation and the emission spectra of UV excited luminescence. Of the series of impurity ions, (PbF2, Y3+) show the best effects on the enhancement of luminescence in PbWO4 crystals. The mechanisms of luminescence enhancement by doubly-doped PbWO4 crystals are discussed in relation with defect structures in impurity-ion-doped PbWO4 lattices.
